Special Needs – Connections

Connections programming supports students displaying chronic, extreme and pervasive behaviours. Students require close and constant adult supervision and a high level of structure to function in an educational setting. To be eligible for this program, students must be in grades 1 to 6 with severe emotional and behavioural challenges and have a clinical diagnosis from a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist.

The goals of the program are to help students to develop and demonstrate emotional self-regulation, positive behaviour, social skills, and academic progress so that, eventually, they may be successfully re-integrated back into a mainstream classroom.

At Aldergrove, the program is delivered in two classrooms: Division I (grades 1-3) and Division II (grades 4-6). Each classroom has one teacher and one educational assistant. Typical enrolment is 10 students per class. The classroom environment is structured, with predictable and clearly articulated routines, procedures, expectations, and schedules.

Yellow busing of students to this program may be available, depending on the child’s walking distance to the school. For more information about busing, contact your child’s school or call Student Transportation at 780-429-8585.
